| Bio: | ![]() "Are you sure what side of the glass you are on?" Name: Himerus Sheridan Duncannon Birthday: 12 October, 1924 House: Slytherin alumnus Year: Graduated in 1942 Heritage: Pureblood (if you don't count the 1/8 hag) Pet: Ural owl named Iris Wand: Poplar and Runespoor fang, 14 inches, pliable Physical Appearance: Bright green eyes fixed in a penetrating stare and a body like that of a 'fat Buddha' are Himerus Duncannon's most prominent features. He is quite bald and gray now, though he once had thick, dark hair. Widely spaced, worn down teeth fill his mouth and can often be seen in a sly grin. His face is heavy and sallow with the remnants of a faded tan. Dunncannon has a nasal voice and is prone to wheezing fits due to bronchial asthma. At 5'10" and some seventy pounds overweight, he has a clumsy, awkward gait. Though he loves elaborate robes made from exotic fabrics, Duncannon typically wears tweed suits and floppy bow ties. His glare has been known to make Muggles run in the other direction. Biography: Himerus Duncannon was born in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire to Alvin and Elizabeth Duncannon, née Fox. Alvin spent most of his time working or drinking in his study, but was amiable enough that Himerus enjoyed what little time they spent together. Elizabeth, on the other hand, was a ruthless social climber and all-around nasty person (due in part to being 1/4 hag). Having only married for money, she was cold and cruel to her family. She would constantly harp on about blood purity, but took dozens of Muggles and Mudbloods as lovers. Her viciousness and hypocrisy earned the hatred of her son and he went out of his way to defy her (he even set her hair on fire with magic). She, in turn, saw him as an enfant terrible and regularly took a cane to his backside. Young Himerus did begin to foster some resentment toward his father for putting up with such a wife, but Alvin died soon after. His son was only ten at the time. Himerus blamed Elizabeth for his father's death and tensions between them rose further. At Hogwarts, Duncannon first displayed a knack for making enemies. He breezed through all his subjects and quickly became bored with the curriculum. To occupy himself, he would argue with and belittle his professors and peers. He was given access to the library's restricted section just get him out of everyone's hair (Duncannon boasted that he'd read every book there by his fifth year). Hexing teachers, shagging girlfriends, and (false) allegations of cheating nearly got him expelled, but the headmaster, Professor Dippet, could never bring himself to put the magical prodigy on the train home. After school, he found work at the Ministry, where he quickly rose through the ranks. Within two years, he became the chief adviser and secretary to then-Minister for Magic, Solomon Mohaither. Though Mohaither took him under his wing, Duncannon's co-workers took an instant dislike to "the prat" (which had been his nickname at Hogwarts as well). It didn't help office relations that the young man was devoting more and more of his energy to the Dark Arts. Duncannon, himself, despised his co-workers and considered them "sheepish fools." Petty squabbles turned into heated rivalries, and eventually he was being challenged to wizard duels. As he was not above using the darkest of curses, many Ministry officials cried foul and Mohaither was forced to sack him to save face. The two men stayed friends and Duncannon would even do occasional freelance work for his old boss. With his hated mother having finally died, Duncannon spent the better part of the next twelve years traveling the world and living off of his inheritance. When the Galleons were running low, he returned to England to find work. Hogwarts was suddenly having a great deal of turn-over in their Defense Against the Dark Arts department. When the latest professor died suddenly, Mohaither recommended to Professor Dumbledore (by now, the new headmaster) that Duncannon take over (1957-58). Dumbledore was a little weary, but agreed to let Duncannon teach for one term, then hire him full-time for the next year if things worked out. The second term hiring was not to be, for that June it was discovered he was not only showing favourtism to one particular student, but writing passionate love poems to her as well. That summer, Duncannon resigned and promptly eloped with the girl, Libitina Pìdàraigh. Unemployed once more, he and Libitina settled in a modest London flat where he could work as a personal assistant to Mohaither. The new Mrs Duncannon discovered, with the help of her husband, that the babbling fits she had suffered all her life were in fact prophecies. She had become pregnant before their first anniversary and gave birth to their daughter, Sappho, on 13 November, 1959. Yet this happy event gave way to a dark descent. Seer's trances and the stress of her husband going on more and more assignments for the Minister brought on melancholia. Libitina took to drinking heavily. When Duncannon came home one night to find that their baby hadn't nursed at all that day, he became furious. He threw Libitina out. After she was ejected from the local pub two weeks later, she went back to their flat, experiencing delirium tremens. Once she was in a sanatorium, he took Sappho and fled for the Scottish Highlands. Though Duncannon was outwardly stoic, his heart was broken. Duncannon bought Fideal House, a centuries old estate on the banks of a remote loch in Scotland. To pay the bills, he had to borrow money from friends and write books. He began to drift from Mohaither over the next two years, who was not pleased by his protege skipping town. They began to quarrel in letters. After a few unpleasant meetings (including one where Mohaither 'stumbled' upon a then three-year-old Sappho being attacked by an unidentified creature as she played outside), Duncannon publicly accused Mohaiter of using Dark magic against him in secret. This was met with disbelief until others came forward to tell the same story. A huge scandal erupted. Mohaither resigned as Minister for Magic and mysteriously died shortly thereafter. Mrs Mohaither, a woman not unlike Elizabeth, was believed to be responsible. She left the country before anything could be proven. Duncannon now felt the Ministry should be disbanded once and for all. He and a growing group of supporters founded the Society for the Promotion of Dark Magic, which has been a stable source of income for the Fideal household. The fraternity's goal is to legitimize the Darks Arts. Libitina died soon after he abandoned her. Despite popular myth, he did not murder her. She died because of poor medical care, as wizard treatments for alcohol withdrawal are lax at best. Duncannon doesn't like to discuss this: however, as he does blame himself. Though he only knew Tom Riddle casually when they attended Hogwarts (Riddle was two years his junior), Duncannon is decidedly quiet about Voldemort. In truth, he wants nothing to do with such a tyrannical figure as the 'Dark Lord,' but he's not foolish enough to let his sentiments be made public. Duncannon currently lives with Sappho (now a fifth year at Hogwarts) and their male house-elf, Apa. Likes: The Dark Arts, liberty, wizard's chess, mountain-climbing, studying, books, pipe-smoking, painting, traveling the world, debating magical theory, extravagant dress robes, hunting (especially trolls), boasting, "naughty bits," seduction, dark-eyed women, and farse. Dislikes: The Ministry of Magic, idiots, having to simplify things for said idiots, the enslaving effects of alcohol, anyone else's authority, blind faith, his mother, taboos, weak curry, this nonsense about it supposedly being wrong to study the Dark Arts, irrationality, repression, his former publishers (ever since they published a book by one of his old Ministry enemies), people who lack self discipline, butter beer, women who leave him, prudent types. Extracurricular Activities: As a student at Hogwarts, young Himerus was too much of a hellion to make prefect. He snubbed Quidditch in favour of the wizard's chess club. Though he was invited to join the Slug Club (on account of his exceptional intelligence and wealthy father), he decided his time was better spent studying on his own and shagging. Duncannon did attempt to start a school debate club, but no student (or teacher, for that matter) was keen enough on being outwitted by him to sign up. Romantic history: Duncanon had his first girlfriend by the time he received his Hogwarts letter. He lost his virginity during the summer before his third year, when he talked his way into a twenty-something woman's knickers. On most nights at Hogwarts, he would sneak out of bed to shag one girl or another. Thus, he earned his fair share of canings and a reputation as a cad. Yet it wasn't until after graduating that he began to add other men to his list of conquests. Despite a few women whom he pursued with reckless abandon, marriage had never been of interest to him. All that suddenly changed during his year as a DADA professor at Hogwarts. An unseen force seemed to draw him to one of his students, Libitina Pìdàraigh, a seventh year Slytherin from Dublin. Their love affair was discovered and he agreed not to return for a second term on the condition that Libitina still be allowed to graduate. They eloped shortly thereafter, but the marriage was doomed. Duncannon divorced her and soon began a romantic friendship with Madam Laylah Cybele. He continues to have numerous stormy affairs, but returns to Cybele after each. ![]() 93 This journal is part of | |||||||||
